Cosmic Charades: Twinkle twinkle, lil - wait, you flirting with me?!

Ever stare at the night sky and wonder why stars twinkle? Is it their way of winking at us earthlings, sending cosmic Morse code? Sorry to burst your intergalactic bubble, but those twinkling stars are actually victims of Earth’s mischievous atmosphere.

Here’s the deal: starlight has to travel millions of miles through space - steady, reliable, and unbothered. But as soon as it hits Earth’s atmosphere, the chaos begins (just like during my family reunions). Think of the atmosphere as a turbulent pool of air, constantly moving and swirling due to temperature changes and wind. As starlight passes through this turbulent soup, it gets bent (scientists call this refraction), making the star’s light seem to flicker or “twinkle.”

The twinkling effect is especially noticeable with stars because they’re so far away. Their light comes from a single point in the sky, which makes it more vulnerable to atmospheric shenanigans and don't we love shenanigans. Planets, on the other hand, appear steadier because they’re closer and their light comes from a larger, more spread-out source - blah.

No hate for the atmosphere though because the twinkling adds a touch of magic to our stargazing adventures.

So, the next time you look up and see a star winking at you, remember: it’s not a cosmic flirtation (don't be so flattered). It’s just the atmosphere playing an elaborate optical prank. I always like sparkle in my life, but this is a new kind of sparkle to add to the mix. And yes, I will still think they are flirting with me (who could resist?).

Puppy Bowl 2025: Where Every Tail is a Trophy Contender

Get ready because in a few weeks, the 2025 Puppy Bowl will be here here and it’s shaping up to be the most adorable, tail-wagging event of the year! Set your calendars for February 9, when over 140 puppies will take the field to compete for the coveted “Lombarky” trophy. Forget touchdowns—it’s all about the “pup-downs” this season. Here are some quick stats.

  • 142 Puppies: The biggest lineup ever! These furry athletes hail from 80 shelters across 40 states and two countries. Talk about an international dream team!

  • Team Ruff vs. Team Fluff: The competition is fierce, but the snuggles are fiercer. Which team will win your heart (and the trophy)?

  • Adoption Awareness: Every single pup is adoptable. Yes, you can cheer for your favorite and potentially take them home!

The Puppy Bowl isn’t just about adorable puppy tackles and floppy-eared touchdowns - it’s a celebration of second chances. Partnering with shelters and rescues, this event shines a spotlight on the importance of adoption. Last year’s event helped countless pups find their forever homes, and this year promises to do even more.

From a Kitty Halftime Show (cue the purring!) to the "Water Bowl Cam" capturing adorable sips, the Puppy Bowl is packed with entertainment. Plus, the “Cheer Squad” (made up of adoptable guinea pigs) is here to cheer on the competitors. Yes, you read that right - guinea pigs in tiny uniforms.

If your dog enjoys watching it, get ready to tape it (ahem, I mean DVR it or Tablo it or something). Catch the 21st annual Puppy Bowl on your favorite streaming platform or live on Animal Planet. Get ready for an overload of cuteness, playful chaos, and wagging tails.

So, grab your sniggity snacks, settle in (like the indentations on my recliner), and prepare to scream “Good boy!” at the TV. Because this isn’t just a game but the feel-good event of the year! 🐶 🎉

My dog has a very specific schedule. We play at 4:00. Not 4:01! She is quite punctual 😀 This made me curious how you spend time with your dog(s)?
